Support Service Provider (SSP) Training

The Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, in the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Division of Public Health, is hosting a Support Service Provider (SSP) Training.  Individuals interested in providing SSP services for compensation through the Service Fund program will need to complete this training.

Training:

Saturday, October 28, 2017, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and

Sunday, October 29, 2017, 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Location:  Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells.  Rooms held under reservation #:  1710DHS

COURSE DETAILS

Providing training opportunities for individuals wishing to work as a SSP is critical as these individuals have a vital and unique role to play in the Deaf-Blind individual’s life. This day and a half course is sponsored by the Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH) and will be taught by Center for Deaf-Blind Persons (CDBP) staff. Through lecture and hands-on practice participants will learn:

  • How to provide environmental, auditory and visual information
  • Proper techniques for guiding safely   
  • The role of the SSP and the SSP Code of Ethics 
  • Rules, policies and responsibilities of a SSP
  • Deaf-Blind culture and technology 
  • Best practices in a variety of settings
  • Independent contractor policies

Anyone interested in becoming an SSP is encouraged to apply. The cost of the training is $100 which includes course materials, lunch on Saturday and snacks throughout the training. All other expenses are the responsibility of the participant. There will be a block of rooms held at the state rate of $82 per night for Friday and Saturday. Presenter Bios:

Lisa Crissey holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Education. Lisa taught for 25 years in both public and private schools in the greater Milwaukee County area, before completing the Interpreter Training Program at UW-Milwaukee (UWM). Lisa started at the Center for Deaf-Blind Persons (CDBP) in 2007. Lisa has instructed Clients in braille, sign language, independent daily living and leisure skills.  Lisa serves as the Employment Specialist, Support Service Provider (SSP) and as the WISH Coordinator (With Impaired Sight and Hearing).

Elyse Heinrich holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Special Education with an Emphasis in Low Vision/Blindness for Students 3-21. She taught as a Teacher of Visually Impaired (TVI) for 5 years in public education settings before returning to school at UW-Milwaukee (UWM) for ASL coursework. Elyse has 18+ credits in ASL and Deaf Culture Studies. Elyse started at the Center for Deaf-Blind Persons (CDBP) in 2014.  Elyse has instructed Clients in, computer, adaptive technology, independent daily living, leisure and cooking skills. Elyse serves as a teacher, Support Service Provider (SSP) and is the Outreach Coordinator.
